Elections in Canada

Liberals' Recurrent Victory in the Canadian Elections: The Trump Factor and the Mark Carney Factor

Komkova E.

Resumo

Parliamentary elections were held in Canada on April 28 this year. They were won for the fourth time in a row by the ruling Liberal Party, which formed a minority government. Its main rival, the Conservatives, had been rapidly losing their seemingly insurmountable advantage of 25 percentage points since January 2025, fell into a slight deficit, and, despite all efforts, were not able to overcome this gap by the election date. The Liberals' unexpected comeback was driven by four conditions: the D. Trump factor, the resignation of the unpopular J. Trudeau, the victory of M. Carney in the Liberal Party leadership election, and the inability of P. Poilievre to refocus the Conservative Party’s campaign in response to the changed circumstances.

Results of the 2025 General Election in Canada: Shaky Stability

Demchuk A.

Resumo

The early general parliamentary elections of 2025, which did not significantly change the political landscape of Canada, outlined a trend of Canadian politics polarization and confirmed the continuing cleavages between the eastern provinces, which support the Liberals, and Western Canada, which supports the Conservatives. The Liberal Party of Canada, which won for the fourth consecutive time but again did not win a majority of seats in the House of Commons and retained control of the minority government, will have to cooperate with opposition parties to pass the necessary bills. A sharp decline in the influence of the New Democratic Party, the Green Party and the Bloc Québécois may mark the beginning of the formation of a de facto two-party system in Canada, as well as bring the issue of reforming the single-member plurality electoral system back into the field of public debate.

100 Days of the Trump Administration

The Second Administration of Republican D. Trump: In the Mirror of the First 100 Days

Shvedova N.

Resumo

The tradition of paying close attention to the 100 days of a new administration dates back to Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose performance at the start of his presidency in 1933 created the 100-day benchmark by which his successors are measured. It is considered a symbolic milestone in the United States and is used to judge how policy will develop throughout an administration. Political scientists are always in a difficult position: they need to understand whether they feel their "umbilical cord that connects them to the spirit of the times". The key is professionalism and impartiality. Now is the time to explore how the period of campaign promises and their implementation works and how these stages are connected? What systemic mechanisms exist in American democracy that, by default, guarantee the fulfillment of promises by political actors, whose victory was based on the commitments made during the campaign? Today, a complex political landscape is emerging: the color of electoral districts is shifting – why? What aspects of this process are shaped by objective circumstances, and what merely acts as temporary triggers? Studying this phenomenon allows us to better understand the diversity and adaptive possibilities of the political system in the United States.

The Policy of President Joe Biden in the Asia-Pacific Region: New Strategy and Its Results, 2021–2025

Panov A.

Resumo

The article is devoted to evaluating the policy of President Joe Biden in the Asia-Pacific region during the years 2021-2025 and its results. It analyses the changes introduced by the implementation of the concept of forming a " ring of encirclement of China" – both in the overall situation in the Asia-Pacific region (APR) and in the relations between the USA and regional states. It is noted that this concept complemented President B. Obama’s strategy of “rebalance to Asia” and President Trump’s strategy of containing China’s rise through trade and ideological warfare. The new American strategy envisages a comprehensive approach to confronting China. Without a complete rejection of previous strategies, it placed emphasis on strengthening the United States’ existing bilateral military-political alliances in the region, making more active use of regional structures with an anti-China orientation, forming new, primarily tripartite partnerships with states concerned with Chinese activities in the region, and making efforts to engage in supporting the American policy of containing China as many regional states as possible. At the conclusion of the analysis of the results of the “ ring of encirclement” concept – essentially, containment of China – it is concluded that in several directions, the administration of President Joe Biden has managed to achieve concrete results. The relations of the USA with regional allies were strengthened, several tripartite partnerships were organized, the Quad forum was revitalized, NATO started to show interest toward participation in regional military-political processes, working-level contacts were established with ASEAN, and relations with key ASEAN members were improved. However, the central goal – to encircle China with a solid anti-China ring under American leadership – was not fully achieved. China continued to methodically strengthen its political, economic and military positions in the Asia-Pacific.

Analysis of the 2024 Presidential Election Through the Prism of the Hispanic Electorate

Chernykh M.

Resumo

The article identifies key groups of Latino voters whose rapidly growing support largely ensured the victory of Donald Trump. The main factors that influenced their choice were economic and immigration issues. In this sense, the elections were a referendum on these issues. Despite political polarization in the United States, 2024 saw a consolidation of the Hispanic electorate. D. Trump played the role of a unifying force. The article outlines the prospects for the development of this trend.

Solar Energy Self-Sufficiency for Households in the USA and China

Gazman V.

Resumo

The priorities of using solar panels on the roofs of residential buildings are examined in the context of the debate between solar and gas generation. The presented generation costs are compared, taking into account all expences that reflect the economic and environmental feasibility of the decision from the perspective of household financial behavior. The article substantiates the need to take into account the economic cost of premature deaths caused by CO2 emissions, healthcare expenditures, and CO2 emission taxes. A system of inequalities is proposed to facilitate the use of securitization in solar electricity production, aiming to reduce the cost of household financing. The results of generation comparability calculations based on data from the U.S. electric power sector for 2023 are presented.

Resumo

Currently, many researchers are faced with the inaccessibility, limited availability, or excessive amount of statistical data on the United States, which is often difficult to navigate quickly, and finding the necessary information takes a significant amount of time. This paper attempts to summarize all major statistical sources related to the United States, providing brief descriptions along with their strengths and weaknesses. This is intended to simplify the work of researchers studying the U.S. and improve the quality of statistical analysis.
